The Role:
As Practice Lead for our State & Local Government (SLED), you own the strategy, growth, and performance of Sol’s SLED practice. You bring Sol’s core capabilities in digital transformation, AI acceleration, and change management to the challenges facing state agencies, counties, and cities, and you are accountable for the practice’s revenue, reputation, and growth.
This role combines delivery leadership with business development. On the delivery side, you lead the practice’s delivery organization and the team of Solution Delivery Directors who run our engagements. On the business development side, you own the practice’s most strategic client relationships and personally lead the pursuits that matter most.
You also shape Sol’s point of view on the forces reshaping state and local government, from legacy modernization and AI adoption to cybersecurity and funding pressures and turn it into service offerings and market positioning that set Sol apart.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the SLED practice P&L and report on practice health to firm leadership, partnering on annual targets, hiring plans, investment, and service offering development.
- Build and own relationships with senior public-sector leaders, including state CIOs, agency secretaries and commissioners, county executives, city managers, and mayors’ offices.
- Partner with Business Development to build a multi-year pipeline aligned to budget and legislative cycles, and lead capture strategy for major RFPs and contract vehicles in line with procurement and ethics rules.
- Set the practice’s go-to-market strategy: which jurisdictions, agency domains (e.g., health and human services, workforce, transportation, public safety, revenue and finance), and service lines to prioritize.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Solution Delivery Directors: recruit strong talent, coach them on engagement strategy and client leadership, and set the delivery standards that keep engagements excellent and growing.
- Champion Sol’s point of view through thought leadership and speaking, and represent the practice at forums such as NASCIO, NASPO, NACo, National League of Cities, GFOA, and ICMA.
Qualifications:
- 15+ years in consulting to, or leadership within, state and local government entities, including 8+ years leading client delivery or engagement teams.
- Have an established network of senior relationships across state agencies, governors’ offices, state and municipal CIOs, counties, and cities that you can activate immediately.
- Proven record of building or scaling a practice or client portfolio, with specific examples of revenue growth achieved personally and through your team.
- Experience applying digital transformation, AI acceleration, and/or change management to public-sector clients, with a clear point of view on where the sector is heading.
- Working knowledge of public-sector procurement, including competitive RFPs and cooperative contract vehicles (e.g., NASPO ValuePoint).
- A proven track record of developing people into stronger leaders, with examples of team members who have grown into senior roles under your leadership.
- Strong executive presence with elected and appointed officials, and the commercial acumen to own a P&L and make resourcing trade-offs.
